Dr. Cyril Onwubiko is a British-Nigerian cybersecurity executive, author and founder. He serves as Director and Business Information Security Officer at Barclays, where he leads cybersecurity for the Cross-Barclays Digital Platform (XDP), a bank-wide ecosystem of digital products and platforms. Before joining Barclays, he served as Senior Director of Enterprise Security Architecture at Pearson, a global leader in education. He has held senior leadership roles across financial services, telecommunications, government, and public-sector organisations.
Dr. Onwubiko is an award-winning professional recognised for advancing global computing education, curriculum innovation, and academia–industry collaboration. He is a recipient of the 2025 Society and Council Professional Development Award, as well as the IEEE Computer Society Golden Core and Distinguished Contributor Awards, in recognition of his technical excellence and lifelong service.
He serves on the Board of the IEEE Computer Society and holds several leadership roles, including Vice President (Professional and Educational Activities Board, 2024-2026) and Distinguished Speaker (DVP). He is also a Member of the European Public Policy Committee for ICT and Artificial Intelligence.
Dr. Onwubiko is a graduate of the University of Oxford, where he completed Organisational Leadership from the Saïd Business School. He holds a PhD in Computer Network Security from Kingston University, London, UK, along with an MSc in Internet Engineering and a BSc (First-Class Honours) in Computer Science and Mathematics. A leading scholar in Cyber Situational Awareness (Cyber SA), cybersecurity, and cyber science, Cyril has extensive experience across multiple domains, including enterprise security architecture, security operations centres, cyber-threat analysis, graph theory, artificial intelligence, data fusion, and the mathematical analysis of security. He has authored several books, including Security Framework for Attack Detection in Computer Networks and Concepts in Numerical Methods, and co-edited Situational Awareness in Computer Network Defense: Principles, Methods & Applications. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals and conferences.
He is an active contributor to the global academic community, serving as a reviewer, keynote speaker, presenter, and steering committee member for over 40 international conferences and journals. He is also an invited guest lecturer at UK universities and a PhD assessor and examiner for institutions including Aalborg University (Denmark), the University of Derby (UK), and Robert Gordon University (Scotland).
In 2009, Dr. Onwubiko, through a consortium comprising Professor Theo Dimitrakos (British Telecommunications, Project Contact), Dr Thomas Owens (Brunel University, Project Manager), and Dr Cyril Onwubiko (Research Series, Project Technical Lead), won a Technology Strategy Board (now Innovate UK) collaborative research and development project competition (Reference code: APPS2B) titled Information Infrastructure Protection: Managing Complexity, Risk & Resilience worth over £1 million pounds. The research, which focused on holistic risk analysis framework for identifying interdependent nature and impact of cumulative risks within large complex infrastructures, is a prototype based on Cyril’s book Security Framework for Attack Detection in Computer Networks, VDM Verlag, ISBN: 3639089340.
In the summer of 2014, Dr. Onwubiko founded the Centre for Multidisciplinary Research, Innovation and Collaboration (C-MRiC), a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation dedicated to advancing high-impact research and innovation through collaboration, and to disseminating scientific and industrial contributions via conferences, seminars, and publications. Its flagship event, Cyber Science, is a multidisciplinary international conference focusing on advanced and emerging aspects of cybersecurity, situational awareness, artificial intelligence, social media, and blockchain technologies. The Centre promotes collaboration among researchers, scholars, practitioners, professional associations, academia, standards bodies, and government departments and agencies.
